Ultrasound detection of uterine abnormalities after diethylstilbestrol (DES) exposure.

Abstract: Diethylstilbestrol (DES) was widely prescribed to pregnant women from 1940 to 1960. This resulted in multiple benign abnormalities of the genital tract and occasional malignant transformation in women who had been exposed to DES in utero. Over 300 cases of clear cell adenocarcinoma of the vagina have been described to date. In this study, 18 DES-exposed women and 20 normal age-matched controls were studied with ultrasound. An estimated uterine volume of 49.4 cm3 +/- 25.5 SD was found in the exposed subjects, c… Show more

“…45 Viscomi and colleagues analyzed the echographic appearance of the uterus in cases of DES exposure. 46 An abnormal T-shape uterus was found in 3 of the 18 (16%) women exposed to DES, a percentage in agreement with an incidence of 12% observed on hysterosalpingogram (HSG). 47 Furthermore, Viscomi and colleagues reported a reduced uterine size with a mean uterine length of 6.8 ± 0.4 cm in 18 DES-exposed women as compared to 8.1 ± 0.8 cm in 20 age-matched controls, even in the absence of gross morphological anomalies.…”

“…The teratogenicity of estrogens on the developing uterus is well established both in laboratory animals and humans (Viscomi et al, 1980;Haney et al, 1979;Cunha et al, 1987;Kaufman et al, 1977Kaufman et al, , 1980Forsberg, 1988;Mori and Iguchi, 1988). Immediate effects of estrogens on the developing uterus include qualitative and quantitative changes in protein synthesis (Newbold et al, 1981(Newbold et al, , 1984 and stimulation of epithelial proliferation (Forsberg, 1970;Eide, 1975a,b;Bigsby and Cunha, 1986).…”

“…Utenne thickness (J) was always measured by a sagittal section (cm) between the antenor and posterior walls. Uterine volume (cm 3 ) was estimated using the formula of Viscomi et al (1980) (4/3rcXL/2x W/ 2X772). By tilting the end of the vaginal probe to the rear, cervical length was measured as the distance separating the external and internal os…”
