Ultrasound Dimensions of the Rotator Cuff and Other Associated Structures in Korean Healthy Adults

Abstract: In evaluating patients complaining of shoulder pain, ultrasonography is an emerging imaging tool due to convenience, low cost, high sensitivity and specificity. However, normative values of ultrasound dimensions of the shoulder to be compared with pathologic findings in Korean adults are not provided yet. We evaluated the ultrasound dimensions of the rotator cuff, long head of biceps tendon, deltoid muscle and acromioclavicular joint in Korean healthy adults. Shoulder ultrasonography was performed on 200 shoul… Show more

“…Interestingly, arthritis was most frequently found in the MTP and wrist joints supporting recent data. 1 In this small cohort there was no significant correlation between CRP positivity and arthritis. Not surprisingly, carotid plaques were more frequent in elderly and/or long-term patients with one or more CRF.…”

“…Gender appears to affect muscle fiber size, as in men type 2 muscle fibers tend to be slightly larger than type 1 fibers, whereas in women the diameter of the two fiber types are identical [24]. This gender dependent difference in thickness is believed to be caused by greater muscle strength in men [25] and muscle strength is correlated to the size of type 2 muscle fibers [26].…”

“…Methods: Assuming a 0.5 mm mean difference and 0.7 mm SD of thickness at rotator cuff tendons with 80% power and 5% significance 119 female subjects (40 patients euthyroid Hashimoto's disease, 28 subclinical hypothyroid Hashimoto's disease and 51 healthy subjects) were recruited. 1 Participants were divided into three groups: Group 1: patients with subclinical hypothyroid Hashimoto's disease, Group 2: patients with euthyroid Hashimoto's disease, Group 3: healthy controls. A rheumatologist experienced in musculoskeletal ultrasonography and blind to clinical data of the patients evaluated the thickness of biceps, subscapularis, supraspinatus, infraspinatus tendons at both shoulders according to standard protocol.…”
