Ultrasound findings of the physiological changes and most common breast diseases during pregnancy and lactation

Abstract: Because of the physiological changes that occur during pregnancy and lactation, diagnostic ultrasound of the breast during these periods is a challenge for physicians. Therefore, a comprehensive understanding of imaging, anatomy, and physiology of the breast is important to effectively diagnosing diseases that can arise in women who are pregnancy or lactating. The aim of this article was to review the physiological changes that occur in the breasts during pregnancy and lactation, as well as to describe the mai… Show more

“…Galactoceles are the most common palpable masses in lactating patients. These are cystic masses with posterior acoustic shadowing and variable internal echonicity depending on their fat, protein, and water content, but vascularity should never be present within a galactocele [2,8]. Lactating adenomas are fibroadenoma-like masses on US scan; however, microlobulations are more frequent and hypervascularity is usually seen on Doppler US.…”

“…Entretanto, com o avanço tecnológico, as imagens ultrassônicas passaram a ter melhor resolução, permitindo a visualização de estruturas muito pequenas no interior da mama (12) , além de identificar o fluxo do leite e a dilatação dos ductos (13) . Entretanto, as desvantagens desse método incluem a impossibilidade da visualização global da mama e a necessidade de um operador com bastante experiência (7) .…”

“…Ultrasonography is the best imaging modality to evaluate breast lesions during pregnancy and lactation, as it is sensitive and confers no radiation exposure [6,11,12]. According to the ACR Appropriateness Criteria, pregnant woman with palpable masses or pathological nipple discharge should be initially evaluated by ultrasonography in order to characterize the features of the lesion and plan proper management [1,7,13].…”
