Ultrasound‐Guided Aspiration of Adnexal Cysts With a Low Risk of Malignancy

Abstract: Objectives The purpose of this study was to establish the viability of ultrasound (US)‐guided adnexal cyst aspiration and identify a target group in which this procedure would be advisable. Methods A prospective cohort of 96 women with a low risk of malignant adnexal cysts was studied between 2002 and 2009, using recurrence after the procedure as the primary outcome measure. All procedures were performed on an outpatient basis without anesthesia. Patients were followed by US imaging at 6, 12, 24, 48, and 72 mo… Show more

“…17 García-Tejedor et al showed a 39% (34/87) recurrence rate of SOC in their follow-up examinations. 4 Similar results, although in a rather small study group, were obtained by Nikolaou et al, who observed a 35.2% (n = 12) recurrence rate after transvaginal ultrasound-guided aspiration of serous ovarian cysts. 8 In our study, the general recurrence rate was considerably lower: 20.2% (17/84); it was 27% in the premenopausal group and 15.2% in the postmenopausal group.…”

“…Up to 24% of ovarian tumors in premenopausal women and up to 60% in postmenopausal women are malignant. 4 Second, aspiration is thought to be ineffective due to continued fluid production by the cyst wall. In the literature, the incidence rates of cyst recurrence after aspiration range 11-75%, but in some studies endometrial and dermoid cysts were included.…”

“…In prior studies, sensitivity rates of ovarian aspiration and needle biopsy varied widely from 25% to 100% [56789101112131415161718192021222324252627]. We reported sensitivity of ovarian needle biopsy to be 75%, which is within the range of prior studies.…”

“…Overall, these findings suggested that the auxiliary device is a safe, stable, and effective alternative treatment option for pelvic cystic masses. García-Tejedor et al (10) reported that the major and minor complications of interventional surgery included severe inflammatory diseases and hemoperitoneum. Using the auxiliary device can effectively reduce the incidences of such complications and shorten the operation time.…”

“…These problems have limited the clinical application of ultrasound-guided aspiration in the treatment of pelvic cystic masses. In recent decades, minimally invasive therapy in pelvic diseases treatment has been regarded as an efficient diagnostic and alternative therapeutic procedure (10,11). However, to the best of our knowledge, few studies have examined the use of auxiliary devices for ultrasoundguided aspiration in the treatment of pelvic cystic masses.…”
