Modern cross-sectional imaging methods of computed tomography, sonography and lately MRI have contributed greatly to non-invasive studies of different parenchymal organs and permit the evaluation of pathological changes in different areas of the body. Although these techniques have reached a very high level of refinement, it is often not possible to define whether a focal lesion is benign or malignant. Ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNA) or core-needle biopsy (including high-speed- and vacuum-assisted techniques) are essential to find out the character of the disease in these cases. Experience of more than 10,000 interventions of different organs are presented. Technique, results, problems, as well as risks are discussed. Moreover, it is shown how the results of percutaneous biopsies often change the treatment of a patient. This is especially of interest in those suffering from lymphomas, pancreatic carcinomas, and breast cancers, as well as relapsing tumors.

Ultrasound imaging is commonly used to guide needle insertion procedures, such as biopsies and anesthesia. In such procedures, the needle can be poorly visualized, making it difficult to determine the needle trajectory. A novel needle detection algorithm is introduced based on the unique needle reflection pattern of circular ultrasound waves. The proposed algorithm was evaluated by locating a needle placed in an agar phantom. Circular waves were created using a 5 MHz, curvilinear transducer array. The coordinates of the needle axis were estimated when the angle between the needle and the transducer central axis was varied between 50 • and 90 • . The differences between the radial and azimuth coordinates of the needle estimated using the proposed algorithm and those calculated using computed tomography scan of the phantom were within 0.1 to 0.5 mm and 0.0 • to 3.1 • , respectively.

Ultrasonographic investigation of the kidneys and efferent urinary tract as well as juxtarenal organ regions has become an indispensable screening method in urology today. Various diseases of the kidneys can be detected rapidly and noninvasively. Some of these clinical pictures are discussed in detail. Above and beyond simple imaging, ultrasonography also allows special diagnostic interventions (biopsy) and therapeutic measures (i.e. nephrostomy).
