Ultrasound-guided peripheral vascular catheterization in pediatric patients: a narrative review

Abstract: Peripheral vascular catheterization (PVC) in pediatric patients is technically challenging. Ultrasound guidance has gained the most interest in perioperative and intensive care fields because it visualizes the exact location of small target vessels and is less invasive than other techniques. There have been a growing number of studies related to ultrasound guidance for PVC with or without difficult access in pediatric patients, and most findings have demonstrated its superiority to other techniques. There are … Show more

“…With the negative results of the studies that used USGRT, it is clear that it is imperative to establish protocols ( 56 - 57 ) , as well as adequate training and experience of professionals who manipulate the equipment ( 57 ) . When it comes to newborns and children, the need for these requirements was highlighted as a disadvantage of USG, as well as the difficulties of some units having a device available 24 hours a day ( 57 - 59 ) .…”

“…reported 112 cases of successful brachial artery catheterization for hemodynamic monitoring with few complications including temporary occlusion (n = 1), local infection (n = 1), and local hematoma (n = 5) [20] . US guidance is recommended for access as it can increase catheterization success rates in children [21] . Nitroglycerin – a smooth muscle relaxant that results in arterial and venous dilation – can be used to mitigate the risk of vasospasm and limb ischemia [19] .…”
