Background: Nontunneled hemodialysis catheters and tunneled hemodialysis catheters, often known as tunneled dialysis catheters, are the two catheter types utilised for vascular access during hemodialysis. Short-term (1 week) consequences include catheter malfunction, central vein stenosis or thrombosis, and catheter-related infection. Long-term (>1 week) complications include those occurring during catheter placement and immediate access-related injuries. Objective: Review of literature about complications of central venous catheters of hemodialysis and their prevention in adults. Methods: Central venous catheters and complications were searched for on Science Direct, Google Scholar, and PubMed. The authors also reviewed the relevant literature. Nonetheless, only the most recent or exhaustive analysis was included, covering the time span from January 2005 to December 2022.There are no translation resources available, thus non-English documents are out. Unpublished articles, oral presentations, conference abstracts, and dissertations were not included because they were not considered to be part of major scientific projects. Conclusion: Infection in the bloodstream is a potentially fatal consequence of a central venous catheter (CVC). The best methods for preserving a catheter have been the subject of numerous scientific investigations. This included delaying replacement, exchanging catheters via a wire, or preserving a new catheter with antibiotic locks and systemic antibiotic therapy, but it was clear that removing the contaminated catheter was the best approach to get rid of the organism.

Dialysis catheters are mandatory in clinical practice of nephrology. Being a complex and potentially associated to complications procedure, it is pertinent to use strategies focused to increase safety of the patient. In the present consensus, the coordinators from nephrology postgraduate schools in Colombia make our statement and recommendations about the use of Ultrasound guidance to insertion of hemodialysis catheters and developing fields to its use in clinical nephrology.

Oliguric patients with acute kidney injury (AKI) often requires an internal jugular vein or femoral venous catheter to establish vascular access for emergency hemodialysis. Puncture with catheterization (PC) of the right internal jugular vein (RIJV) is relatively simple and is often the first choice for hemodialysis catheters insertion. However, complications such as bleeding and hematoma at the puncture site can occur, and in rare cases, the hemodialysis catheter (HDC) can be misplaced into the internal carotid artery, subclavian artery, subclavian vein, or even the thoracic cavity and mediastinum, leading to intractability for processing next. In this study, we report a case of an elderly female patient with AKI who underwent RIJV puncture for long-term HDC because her renal function had not recovered in the short term, and the lower end of the catheter penetrated the superior vena cava (SVC) into the mediastinum due to operator’s carelessness. We did not perform open surgery or endovascular interventions, and instead, the HDC was retained in that place for four weeks and then directly removed without surgery. The patient did not experience any problems, such as bleeding or hematoma, and has been receiving hemodialysis from femoral catheter subsequently since then. doi: https://doi.org/10.12669/pjms.39.2.6674 How to cite this: Li X, Ran F, Guo Y.
