Ultrasound of the whole breast utilizing a dedicated automated breast scanner.

Abstract: Innovations in design of a dedicated breast scanner resulted in automation of the scanning process, the production of high resolution images of the whole breast and an efficient mode of image review. The results of clinical evaluation of the prototype of this breast scanner investigating normal breasts as well as benign and malignant breast lesions are presented.

“…The potential of automated breast ultrasound technology was investigated and reported in 1968 by Wells and Evans (1968). Commercial scanners became available in the 1970s (Maturo et al 1980). Thereafter, various different automated systems were available for breast ultrasound scanning for clinical use (Chang et al 2006;Jackson et al 1986).…”

“…[4][5][6]8,9 If automated scanning of suspended breasts in a water tank can be performed, the scanning method could be uniform. [4][5][6]8,9 However, because maintenance of a large volume of warm deaerated water is troublesome and the quality of the images is poor, it has not been used. Recently, ABVS with a high-resolution transducer, designed for scanning patients in the supine position, was introduced.…”
