Ultrastructural and molecular identification of Sarcocystis tenella (Protozoa, Apicomplexa) in naturally infected Korean native goats

Abstract: ABSTRACT:Sheep is the intermediate host of the protozoan parasite Sarcocystis tenella, while the dog is its definitive host. This study was conducted to determine the prevalence of natural infection with S. tenella in slaughtered Korean native goat, Capra hircus coreanae, in the Republic of Korea. H-E stained heart tissues were investigated for the presence of sarcocysts. Of the 103 goats, three (2.91%) were diagnosed as positive for S. tenella by light, electron microscopic and molecular examination. The hist… Show more

“…In the end, only 35 articles were included in this study. Forty sets of data were obtained, including 30 sets on sheep [5,9, and 10 on goats (Figure 2, Tables 1 and 2) [16,17,[36][37][38][41][42][43][44][45]. Meta analysis data can be downloaded from Supplementary Material.…”

“…(2015) and Hong et al . (2016), the phylogenetic relationship was established in this study based on the use of 18S rRNA due to the perpetuated 18S rRNA gene regions play a pivotal role in the primary development that can be used to the amplification of similar genes in related species, as well as high‐repetition ribosomal DNA sequences and variable regions flanked by more conserved regions. “…Three of them, S. arieticanis, S. bertrami and S. capracanis are widespread worldwide and commonly found in sheep, horse, and goat, respectively [1]. Globally, S. capracanis is the most common species in goats [42,43], S. bertrami is apparently the only species infecting horses [38], and S. arieticanis together with S. tenella are the most frequent species in sheep [44][45][46][47]. Sarcocystis arieticanis and S. capracanis are also commonly detected in wild species of the subfamily Caprinae [31,43,[47][48][49].…”
