Ultrastructural Localization of Acid Phosphatase in Germ Cells of Chick Embryo Left Ovary

Abstract: The ultracytochemical localization of acid phosphatase was studied in oogonia and oocytes of the chick embryo left ovary. The reaction products are evident in lysosomes of various types and, in some cells, in the GERL as well. Furthermore, from the onset of the meiotic prophase, the enzymatic reaction also appears in the rough endoplasmic reticulum. Non-incubated sections of the same stages were observed, with the aim of identifying and describing the structure of the organelles, in particular lysosomes which … Show more

“…In vivo histology and in vitro experiments conducted over thirty years ago indicated that female germ cells enter meiotic prophase during embryogenesis in birds, as occurs in mammals [ 24 - 26 ]. These early studies variably reported that meiosis in the left female chicken gonad commences on day 14, 15, 16, 17 or 18 of development [ 14 , 15 , 27 ]. We have found that chicken STRA8 is up-regulated specifically in the left female gonad from day 12.5, as assessed by qRT-PCR, and meiosis is detectable by SCP3 immunostaining in some cells at day 15.5, becoming widespread at day 16.5 and 17.5 (Fig.…”

“…In the ZW left gonad, somatic and germ cells proliferate in the cortex, which thickens considerably, while the cords of the medulla become vacuolated, forming lacunae. The germ cells of the left ZW gonad enter in meiosis asynchronously from day 15 [5], [6], [7]. The meiotic entry of female germ cells is then completed before hatching.…”
