Discussion.

“…Rogers (1972) reported a trilaminar membrane resembling wall layer 1 in C. cinereus on the basidial apex and basidiospore in C. stercorarius; a similar structure is found on walls of some green algae (Staehelin and Pickett-Heaps, 1975). My results support the work of Hugueney (1972Hugueney ( , 1975b and Besson-Antoine and Kuhner (1972a) , except that these authors did not observe wall layer 1. The results contradict the reports of Perreau-Bertrand (1967), Clemencon (1970Clemencon ( , 1975, Pegler and Young (1971), and Olah and Reisinger (1974) [Vol.…”

“…In terms of the wall layers as reported by Heintz and Niederpruem (1971), layer 3 in C. cinereus corresponds to the ectospore, layer 4 to the perispore, layer 5 to the exospore, and layer 6 to the epispore. Layer 6 is electron transparent or nearly so in stage 4 in C. cinereus, but it is electron opaque in mature spores which agrees with the results of Hugueney ( 1972). The difference in wall thickness between my study and that of Heintz and Niederpruem (1971) can be accounted for by the centripetal addition after stage 4 of the remainder of wall layer 6 and the endospore wall layers.…”
