Ultrathin flexible terahertz polarization converter based on metasurfaces

Abstract: We present a method to design and fabricate a kind of converters based on flexible metasurfaces which can change the polarization state of an incident terahertz beam. The metasurface consists of a two-dimensional array of rectangular metallic antennas that can abruptly change the phase of the incoming terahertz beam. Experimentally demonstrated half-wave plates generate 0.1 THz beam with a π/2 polarization rotation. By slightly changing the structure of the converter, an elliptically or circularly polarized be… Show more

“…The induced currents on the nanoantennas and the ground plane are antiparallel, thus generating a strong magnetic field inside the insulator, known as gap-surface plasmon modes. [25,26] Figure 2d,e show the design of nanorod antennas [21] and H-shaped antennas [22] operating in the nearinfrared and microwave regimes, respectively. The radiation phase can be efficiently tuned by simply changing the antenna length.…”

“…The radiation phase can be efficiently tuned by simply changing the antenna length. [26][27][28][29][30] Meanwhile, since the reflected amplitude does not vary too much from one unit structure to another, one can merely focus on phase response in the design stage. As transmission is suppressed by the metallic ground plane, the conversion efficiency to the anomalous reflection mode can reach as high as 80%.…”

“…Thus, metasurfaces provide a novel way to manipulate EM waves, including their polarization state. In recent years, many metasurface-based polarization devices with diverse functionalities, such as linear to linear, linear to circular, and circular to circular polarization conversion, have been demonstrated 1719 . The polarization converters that function in transmission mode usually have the disadvantages of being narrowband and having a low polarization conversion efficiency.…”
