Ultraviolet Spectroscopy and TARDIS Models of the Broad-lined Type Ic Supernova 2014ad

Abstract: Few published ultraviolet (UV) spectra exist for stripped-envelope supernovae and none to date for broad-lined Type Ic supernovae (SNe Ic-bl). These objects have extremely high ejecta velocities and are the only supernova type directly linked to gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Here we present two epochs of HST/STIS spectra of the SN Ic-bl 2014ad, the first UV spectra for this class. We supplement this with 26 new epochs of ground-based optical spectra, augmenting a rich spectral time series. The UV spectra do not sho… Show more

“…To estimate the unobserved UV flux (in our case, f λ<w2 ), some authors extrapolate the bluest ( ¯¯) l f , x x point linearly to zero flux at 200 nm (e.g., Lyman et al 2014;Taddia et al 2018b;Sharon & Kushnir 2020). This has been justified by the argument that the contribution of the flux to the bolometric flux is negligible below this wavelength (e.g., see the UV spectra of Ben-Ami et al 2012, 2015, and Kwok et al 2022). Applying such an extrapolation, we find that the contribution of f λ<w2 to f λ<B is lower than 10% for 95% of the available epochs, with a typical contribution value around 3%.…”

“…More detailed radiative transfer modeling is required to investigate the differences between SN 2019ewu and SN 2020akf. Early blue relatively featureless continua have also been observed in some standard SNe Ic-bl (SN 2014ad; Kwok et al 2022) as well as more exotic SNe Ic-bl (SN 2018gep; Pritchard et al 2021, iPTF16asu;…”

We note that the blue continuum exhibited by SN 2019ewu and SN 2020akf is also seen in the recently observed SN Ic 2022oqm (Irani et al 2022).…”
