Ultraweak long-range interactions of solitons observed over astronomical distances

Abstract: We report what we believe is the weakest interaction between solitons ever observed. Our experiment involves temporal optical cavity solitons recirculating in a coherently-driven passive optical fibre ring resonator. We observe two solitons, separated by up to 8,000 times their width, changing their temporal separation by a fraction of an attosecond per round-trip of the 100 m-long resonator, or equivalently 1/10,000 of the wavelength of the soliton carrier wave per characteristic dispersive length. The intera… Show more

“…7 is initially driven by the inherent velocity of each soliton, whereas the final formation of bound states is controlled by the interacting oscillatory tails and soliton cores. Such interaction of solitons over very long distances has also been shown experimentally, where the soliton movement was induced via acoustic waves rather than TOD [54].…”

“…This new structure is nucleated with a temporal separation of 570 ps from ARTICLE another existing structure. Consequently, the new structure is repelled from the nearest neighbour in a way that is strongly reminiscent of the ultraweak force between temporal cavity solitons 32,33 but in the present case we can attribute this interaction to the refractory time following excitable pulses 34 . This interaction lasts B50 round-trips.…”

“…Formally equivalent to monolithic Kerr resonators are lower repetition-rate fiber-loop resonators, where generation and control of soliton ensembles has recently been explored experimentally [13][14][15][16] . These experiments were preceded by theoretical studies of soliton interactions and ensembles of solitons in quasi-CW-pumped fiber-ring resonators [17][18][19] , where an analogy between soliton ensembles and the states of matter was introduced.…”
