Abstract:Due to increasingly better long-term survival rates with dialysis the number of patients with renal failure constantly increases by 4% annually worldwide. Despite great progress in operative and perioperative management as well as improved immunosuppressive drugs, kidney transplantation still faces two major problems. First of all there is a huge deficit of donor organs and secondly the long-term results of the kidney grafts must be improved.
