UML for ESL Design - Basic Principles, Tools, and Applications

Abstract: This paper starts with a brief introduction to the UML 2.0 and application-specific UML customizations via profiles. After a discussion of UML design tools with focus on EDA support, we present a HW/SW co-design approach and demonstrate how HW architectures are described together with application SW in a unique UML based environment. Using a dedicated profile providing support for SystemC in UML, and a SystemC wrapper for the SimIt instruction set simulator of a StrongARM, an executable model of the complete a… Show more

“…Following the change on the focus from implementation code to model, new methods change the specification level to more abstract models, such as Simulink [23,27], UML [5,14], or a combination of them [28]. The approach presented in [22] combines UML, SysML and SystemC, to provide a common and structured environment for system documentation and specification.…”

“…As a system level specification, UML diagrams are becoming popular in embedded system design [4,[12][13][14]. To guarantee the quality of embedded systems, model-based test process [15] is proposed.…”

“…Unified Modeling Language (UML) [1,2] is becoming a promising specification language for both software and hardware designs [3][4][5]. It provides a set of diagrams that can capture different system views.…”

“…SystemC is used as the modeling language of the system; they created a system model with SystemC semantics. In addition, the use of this profile enables a HW/SW co-design methodology based on SystemC [10]. Another way of combining UML and SystemC is using mapping rules [11] to establish an automatic transformation between UML and SystemC.…”
