With the projected increase of 3G network traffic in near future, telecom operators are looking for the alternative means of satisfying the data needs of mobile subscribers without scaling the existing 3G network infrastructure. Over the last decade, IEEE 802.11 network (better called as Wi-Fi network) has emerged as one of the most competitive technology for it. It can function with the macro cellular network, as an adjunct network, to provide an alternative path with the best performance capability. On the other hand, several studies have reported the discovery of fundamental statistical features of human mobility. Studies show that human trajectories show a high degree of temporal and spatial regularity, thus following simple reproducible patterns. This paper proposes a probability based approach to find the mobility patterns of users and then use the information to effectively decrease the handover latency and increase throughput.

-The seamless continuity of services between 3G networks and WLANs will give users the feeling of a common environment towards the wireless technology. Three main aspects must be considered to obtain seamless continuity: an enabling interworking architecture, fast inter-system handovers (they must be fast enough in terms of human senses), and, in the case of real-time services, a similar quality of service (QoS) in both networks. This paper focuses on the two first issues. It presents an interworking architecture based on a 3G core-level integration of the WLANs. The GPRS network is available all the time forming a primary network, and WLANs are used as a complement when they are available. The switching times between networks are very low and the transitions are lossless. Our proposal does not disrupt with the current 3GPP standardization efforts making it viable in a medium time frame. This paper presents an overview of the architecture, describes the relevant events in the switching process (where the authentication and authorization procedures have an important role), and gives simulated values for the switching times.

UMTS/WLAN integration offers considerable benefits for the mobile users as well as for the mobile network. As soon as coverage is available, a mobile user should switch seamlessly from the ubiquitous low bandwidth UMTS network to a high bandwidth WLAN. This will improve his quality of service, but also increases capacity in the cellular network. To be able to change between radio access technologies, an inter-RAT handover protocol is needed. If this handover protocol is not fast enough, the vehicular user will penetrate deep into the cell before packets get delivered to the right access point, underutilizing the available bandwidth with a lower overall performance as a result. In this paper, we introduce a new vertical handover protocol which uses location information from the vehicle to predict where and when the handover should occur, thus optimizing user throughput and network performance. We consider its deployment on three UMTS/WLAN integration scenarios.
