Un demi-siècle de travaux philologiques sur Augustin : Bilan et perspectives

Abstract

En dépit de la précision qu'apporte l'adjectif 'philologique', le sujet reste immense. Si je tentais d'être exhaustif, mon exposé se transformerait vite en un chapitre desséché de bibliographie rétrospective. Les progrès accomplis en cinquante ans sur les manuscrits et les textes d'Augustin ont été prodigieux, mais il existe des répertoires actualisés qui signalent les meilleures éditions et les études critiques1 ; d'autre part, la présence sur la toile, en libre accès, d'une bibliographie augustinienne de près de trente mille titres laisse peu de place à une entreprise artisanale2. Le bilan ici proposé sera donc bref et subjectif ; il ne fera que baliser les grandes avenues de la recherche récente, afin de dégager des perspectives. Car voulant privilégier l'avenir, j 'ai cru plus utile d'esquisser une carte des sentiers les moins piétinés, pour les jeunes philologues qui voudraient s'engager dans des recherches originales.
