Un/Making in the Aftermath of Design

Abstract: This paper takes as its starting point the fact that we live in the aftermath of previous making and design. For participatory design to adequately answer to this aftermath, we suggest building on a combination of participatory and speculative design approaches in everyday life settings and exploring the practice of un/making matters. The paper draws on two cases where participants have been invited to engage with recent scientific findings and practices -one where they explore the practice of un/making plasti… Show more

“…Repairing nature and landscapes requires us to repair ourselves. If we recognise this interconnectedness, we will see how other beings, such as plants, can also play a role in repairing damaged landscapes, such as those seen in Sweden's heavily polluted post-glass Wuyts 109 factory plants (Lindström & Ståhl, 2020). Creating a bright future becomes less daunting when we realise we are not the only ones with the necessary skills and abilities.…”

“…On the one hand, that might mean thinking about building new orders in the world's aftermaths: working with the conditions at hand and without the expectation of solutions (Tsing, 2017). On the other, reparation might also mean un-making damaging systems through design for decline (Tonkinwise, 2019;Lindström and Ståhl, 2020).…”

“…As Fry (2009) says, it is urgent to stop the tendency to create futures without a future in which the products, technologies and services that design creates are not materially or ethically aligned with the fragility of the Planet. Various scholars (Fry, 2009;Bonnet et al, 2019;Latour, 2020;Lindström & Ståhl, 2020;DiSalvo, 2022) have insisted on the need to reorient our actions towards a policy of dismantling. In other words, this design is no longer solely concerned with encouraging new innovation or products, but is rather committed to experiencing practices of unmaking and deceleration that contribute to decreasing the human footprint on the Planet.…”
