Un nouveau sondage sur la terrasse d'El Ouad, Israël

Abstract: A re-examination of the deposits at El-Wad Terrace was carried out in 1980-81. Layers B.2 (Early Natufian) and B.I (Late Natufian) were found as described by Garrod. The uppermost layer A is disturbed but the flint industry can be classified as an evolved Natufian, recently named Final Natufian. Together with Mallaha (Eynan), the sequence of El-Wad is therefore the longest presently known among Natufian sites. The paper presents the lithic industry, isolated human teeth, bone objects, marine molluscs, land sna… Show more

“…Younger fossil and sub-fossil records document the marked relictual nature of the extant distribution of P. syriacus in the eastern Mediterranean, particularly in Israel where the species has been reported from the late Pleistocene of Abu Usba (Haas 1951), Geula Cave (Haas 1967), Hayonim Cave (Bar-Yosef andTchernov 1966), Iraq e Zigan (Heller 1978) and probably el-Wad Terrace (as Pelobates sp. : Valla et al 1986), and in the late Bronze Age (approx. 1300-1200 BC) of Ara cave (Delfino et al 2007).…”

“…An analysis of the entire ground stone assemblage of el-Wad Terrace was recently published (Rosenberg et al 2012) adding to other studies that dealt with ground stone assemblages from previous excavations at the site (Garrod & Bate 1937: 10;Valla et al 1986;Weinstein-Evron 1998: 96-98).…”

“…The site was first investigated by C. Lambert in 1928 (Weinstein-Evron 2009: Chapter 2), but became wellknown as a result of D. Garrod's 1929Garrod's -1933 excavation campaign (Garrod & Bate 1937). The terrace was later revisited (Valla et al 1986) as was the cave (Weinstein-Evron 1998: Chapter 5).…”

“…Both Early and Late/Final Natufian assemblages have been excavated at the site. Together with el-Wad Cave, the site contains one of the longest and most complete Natufian sequence in the Levant (Garrod and Bate 1937;Valla et al 1986;Weinstein-Evron 1998, 2009Weinstein-Evron et al 2007, in press). The archaeological stratigraphy is described in Weinstein-Evron et al (2007 and these proceedings).…”
