Abstract:This paper aims to analyse the evolution of the use of mitigation in dialogues between mother and child and their effects on sociocultural face in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. In order to do this, by using a corpus of four plays, a qualitative and quantitative analysis of the use of mitigation as a pragmatic strategy in directive speech acts between mother and children will be developed from a diacronic perspective.
