Uncertainty and sensitivity analysis of properties of phase change micro/nanoparticles for thermal protection during cryosurgery

Abstract: Based on our previous study which tested the feasibility of protecting the healthy tissue around the cancerous tissue during cryosurgery by microencapsulated phase change materials (PCMs) with large latent heat and low thermal conductivity, uncertainties and sensitivities for thermal protection efficiency caused by the deviations of the PCM properties' values, the PCMs concentration and the distance between the PCMs domain and the tumor domain were further investigated in this study. The preliminary results sh… Show more

“…Several biological challenges include the lack of administration routes, the tempered distribution of nanoparticles and the ability to cross physical barriers, decay, and toxicity [175]. Due to their intravenous injection, nanoparticles are injected directly into the bloodstream, which transports them away from the targeted area, preventing them from interacting with the target site.…”

“…In recent years, phase change materials (PCMs) made from NPs have demonstrated excellent protective potential for surrounding healthy tissues during cryosurgery [ 75 ]. For example, Lv et al microencapsulated phase change NPs with large latent heat and low thermal conductivity through liposomes, and before cryosurgery, injected microencapsulated phase change NPs into healthy tissues around the tumor and found that avoided low temperature damage to healthy tissue [ 76 ].…”

“…Nanoparticles are injected intravenously in to blood and they do not get enough time to interact with target site or we can say they lack time due to route followed for administration of drug (Lv et al, 2012). As a result, they are required in higher concentration to show the desirable impact.…”
