Uncommon Adverse Effects of Deoxycholic Acid Injection for Submental Fullness: Beyond the Clinical Trials

Abstract: Deoxycholic acid (BELKYRATM, Allergan, Markham, ON, Canada) is a minimally invasive injectable treatment approved by Health Canada for the nonsurgical reduction of submental fullness. Multiple phase III clinical trials have proven the efficacy and safety of deoxycholic acid. In the clinical trials, the most common adverse events (AEs) reported, such as injection site pain, numbness, swelling, bruising and induration, were transient and mild-to-moderate in severity. Additional postmarketing AEs have been report… Show more

“…Subcutaneous injection of DC, causes tissue necrosis due to its cytotoxic and detergent effects on the cellular layer, and most frequent adverse events are associated with this procedure, including local pain, oedema, bruise, with complications such as nerve injury, vascular events, skin necrosis, and alopecia, requiring difficult management of said adverse effects due to lack of specific intervention protocols. 4,5 Just a few of these non-invasive therapies are faster and cheaper to perform, with fewer complications and minimal downtime than surgical or injection therapy procedures.…”

It is the seventh most popular cosmetic operation (with 126,713 operations done in USA in 2014) and the most prevalent aesthetic surgery in people over the age of 65.…”

“…Deoxycholic acid (DA) injection is used to decrease preplatysmal fat and facial fullness by disrupting adipocyte cellular membranes [141]. DA injection ultimately leads to adipocyte cell lysis and decreases the number of adipocytes, reducing the appearance of facial fullness [141]. Common adverse effects of DA injection include injection site pain, swelling, and bruising [142].…”
