Unconventional spin-phonon coupling via the Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction

Abstract: Spin-phonon coupling (SPC) plays a critical role in numerous intriguing phenomena of transition metal oxides (TMOs). In 3d and 4d TMOs, the coupling between spin and lattice degrees of freedom is known to originate from the exchange interaction. On the other hand, the origin of SPC in 5d TMOs remains to be elucidated. To address this issue, we measured the phonon spectra of the 5d pyrochlore iridate Y 2 Ir 2 O 7 using optical spectroscopy. Three infrared-active phonons soften below the Néel temperature of T N … Show more

“…Experimentally, the largest spin-phonon coupling is observed in a 5d perovskite oxide, corresponding to a frequency shift of 40 cm −1 . 75 In comparison, a frequency shift of ∼2.7 cm −1 is observed for the E g mode of the chromium-based 2D material Cr 2 Ge 2 Te 6 (CGT) around its T c . This corresponds to a λ of ∼ 1.2 cm −1 .…”

“…We will outline a few possible mechanisms to achieve this coupling, all of which exploit electron-phonon interactions. Within the context of ultrafast optics, phonomagnetic interactions are by now a well established way of coupling Terahertz optical fields to electronic spins [31,34,36,49,160,[190][191][192][193][194]. The combination of a relatively large electric dipole matrix element and strong electron-phonon interaction [195] at the appropriate energy scale also makes this a promising route for engineering linear coupling of spins to the cavity electromagnetic field.…”

“…The spin-phonon coupling give rise a numerous intriguing physical phenomena in magnetic materials [52]. This coupling manifest itself in shifts of the phonon frequencies due to magnetic ordering and originates from the modulation of the superexchange integrals by lattice vibrations.…”
