Underlying factors in the willingness to receive and barriers to receiving the COVID-19 vaccine among residents in the UK and Nigeria: a qualitative study

Abstract: Qualitative data on the factors underlying the willingness to receive and barriers to receiving the COVID-19 vaccine were scant in the literature. Therefore, the authors employed a qualitative design with a heterogeneous sample of 60 residents (age range = 18-79 years) in the UK and Nigeria to explore the factors underlying their willingness to receive and barriers to receiving the COVID-19 vaccine. The thematic analysis was employed to analyze data. The results revealed that only a small number of the partici… Show more

“…These findings clarify some of the earlier work on religiosity and HPV [ 12 , 13 , 14 , 15 , 21 ] by taking a two-step approach to how religiosity affects vaccination intent. We explored how religiosity impacts other factors that lead to vaccination decision making, specifically in the context of Christianity in America.…”

“…The reported vaccination rates for young adults are even lower than adolescents. The US department of Health and Human Services (HHS) estimates that, in the United States, less than half of young adults (ages [18][19][20][21][22][23][24][25][26] have received an HPV vaccine dose, and only 22% have completed a vaccine series [11]. HPV vaccination rates are increasing in teenagers but still fall below the vaccination target of 80%.…”

“…Following the quantitative and qualitative data analyses, the results from both strands were integrated. Both authors conducted the data analyses of this study and we both had expertise in conducting data analyses in health and psychological research (e.g., Ogueji, 2021 ; Ogueji & Okoloba, 2022 ; Ogueji et al, 2021a , 2021b ; Okoloba et al, 2020 ). Our qualitative strand was in keeping with the consolidated criteria for reporting qualitative studies (COREQ; Booth et al, 2014 ).…”

“…Additionally, many a time, socio-political forces (e.g., history of racism, membership to the low socioeconomic group, etc.) contribute to inequalities in the healthcare system among Black family members, and this has associations with poor professional help-seeking behaviors (Cénat, 2020 ; Cloos & Bilsen, 2021 ), and poor health outcomes for Black family members (Blom et al, 2016 ; Ogueji & Okoloba, 2022 ), unlike White people and Black people in higher socioeconomic groups who may experience less of this (Levine et al, 2016 ).…”

“…Mistrust and concerns about side effects may have played an important role in the people’s willingness to receive a vaccine. In addition, the unavailability of vaccines in certain locations and restrictions favoring predominantly high-risk groups could have been barriers that limited vaccination [ 11 ]. In Ukraine, only 35.7% of the population had received two doses of the vaccine by late February 2022 when the war began, a much lower proportion than the average reported for European Union nations (71%) [ 6 , 12 ].…”
