Underrated enemy – from nonalcoholic fatty liver disease to cancers of the gastrointestinal tract

Abstract: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is intrahepatic ectopic lipid deposition which is present despite a lack of other causes of secondary hepatic fat accumulation. It is the most common chronic liver disorder in the welldeveloped countries. NAFLD is a multidisciplinary disease that affects various systems and organs and is inextricably linked to simple obesity, metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance and overt diabetes mellitus type 2. The positive energy balance related to obesity leads to a variety of sy… Show more

“…In addition, NAFLD is strongly associated with features of the metabolic syndrome, including obesity, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes (DM2) and dyslipidemia 1,2. NAFLD represents a new emerging risk factors for the onset of extra-hepatic tumors, particularly in the development of tumors of the gastro-intestinal tract 3,4. Risk factors associated with the development of NAFLD include bad eating habits associated with a sedentary lifestyle.…”

“…Evident dysregulation of serum cytokines levels, altered gut microbiota and bile acids composition are also connected to metabolic syndrome. Dysregulation of adipose tissue derived hormones (adipocytokines/adipokines) might also be involved in obesity-related liver carcinogenesis [3][4][5][6][7]. Adipokines disbalance, such as dysregulation in level of adiponectin, leptin, resistin, chemerin, visfatin and some others, have been identified as a factor increasing fibrosis progression, inflammation and steatosis in chronic liver diseases including NAFLD/NASH, CHB and alcoholic liver disease (ALD) [4][5][6][7][8][9].…”

“…NAFLD is the most common chronic liver disease in developed countries. The estimated prevalence of NAFLD ranges from 10% to 25% [6]. Until now, there has been no effective treatment of NAFLD.…”

“…Until now, there has been no effective treatment of NAFLD. The only way to deal with this disease is weight loss and treatment of comorbid conditions [6]. Thus, dietary strategies that prevent the development of liver steatosis or its progression to NASH are critically needed [7].…”
