Understanding and managing cascades on large graphs

Abstract: How do contagions spread in population networks? Which group should we market to, for maximizing product penetration? Will a given YouTube video go viral? Who are the best people to vaccinate? What happens when two products compete? The objective of this tutorial is to provide an intuitive and concise overview of most important theoretical results and algorithms to help us understand and manipulate such propagation-style processes on large networks. The tutorial contains three parts: (a) Theoretical results on… Show more

“…It has been demonstrated the degree of closeness ascribe to these both approaches, indicating individual gained value by affecting others [10]. There are different types of approaches to measure value and diffusion such as Hyperlink-Induced Topic Search (HITS) algorithm.…”

“…Estimating the importance of individual users in terms of information diffusion [23] has been studied under the topic of finding influential users who significantly affect their neighbors (connections). Following the seminal theory on the "influentials" by Katz and Lazarsfeld [14,29], the problem of identifying influential users has been studied in several different contexts.…”

“…In fact, a web page is ranked high if many authoritative pages point to it, and an individual is most valuable if he/she influences many influential people. While authority and influence appear quite different at first glance, several researchers have sensed that they are essentially the same, e.g., we can interpret this type of cascade process [Prakash and Faloutsos 2012] as the individual earns authority by influencing others. Thus, some ranking work does not even distinguish between these two concepts deliberately Weng et al 2010;.…”
