Understanding backpacker sustainable behavior using the tri-component attitude model

Abstract: Research on sustainable practices of backpackers lacks a comprehensive model for understanding their sustainable behavior. This paper argues that the contribution of backpacker tourism to sustainable consumption can be achieved if backpackers' attitudes and behaviors are understood and managed. Predicated on the tri-component attitude model that conceptualizes attitude as a complex relationship among cognition (backpacker motivations and perceived impacts of backpacking), actions (backpacker sustainable and un… Show more

“…In Adam's (2015) research, the majority of backpackers had university/college or postgraduate education (60.0% and 11.8% respectively). The same trend was found in Agyeiwaah et al (2021) and Martins and Costa (2021b).…”

“…Surprisingly, in Adam's (2015) study on backpackers' risk perceptions and risk reduction strategies in Ghana, 74.1% of the backpackers were female. In more recent researches conducted by Adam et al (2021) and Agyeiwaah et al (2021), 54.5% were female. As has happened in many other aspects of contemporary societies, women's participation has been increasing and if this growth trend continues in the future, we will have more women associated with backpacking.…”

“…However, the potential underlying explanation for such attitudinal and behavioral patterns of (un)sustainability among these travelers are rarely examined as part of directing backpacker's behaviors towards responsible consumption in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 12. Agyeiwaah et al (2021) address this inherent research gap by examining the relationships among backpacker motivation, perceived impacts of backpacking, backpacker (un)sustainable behaviors, and their satisfaction using the tri-component attitude model. Their results reveal two cognitive factors (i.e.…”

“…Although the TPB has been used extensively in the literature on activism, some scholars (e.g., Agyeiwaah et al, 2021;Cho & Richardson Walton, 2009) have claimed that this theory is limited when considering affective influences on behavior because the three components (i.e., attitude, subjective norm, and perceived control) are based on cognitive beliefs. The TPB does not include the affective aspects and the complex interactions among individual thoughts, feelings, and actions.…”

“…As pointed out by Agyeiwaah et al (2021), the limitation of the TPB about activism was taken into account in the Tricomponent Attitude Theoretical Model (TATM; Rosenberg, et al, 1960). Agyeiwaah et al (2021) argued that activism involves three elements: cognition, affect, and behavior. The cognitive component involves the principles, opinions, and information individuals have about the object.…”
