Caste, a form of social stratification around notions of purity and pollution, has yielded five groups, namely, Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas and Shudras within the varna system and Dalits outside the varna system. Being untouchables at the bottom end of the social hierarchy, Dalits undergo persistent and pervasive abuse in all aspects of life including the workplace. Treated as subhumans unworthy of any rights, Dalits experience discrediting, stigmatization, rejection, various forms of segregation and access denial, exclusion, physical violence and emotional abuse.
