Understanding Friction and Wear Behaviours of Smooth Resilient Surfaces: Application for Pedestrian Fall Safety Improvements

Abstract: The recent literature identified that certain types of smooth floors and flooring materials showed good slip-resistance performance under moderately contaminated situations such as water wet and soapsuds-covered conditions. However, topographic structures of such flat floor/walkway surfaces are significantly changed by wear and tear developments with continuous ambulation. A number of reasons seem to be involved in flooring wear developments, but such changes may result in substantial losses of slip resistance… Show more

“…Because ablution floors might get hastily worn and damaged under the occupied and polluted environments, they seem to be more slippery than areas with no pedestrian traffic. Thus, it is suggested that this issue needs thorough analysis in future studies to generate safer and healthier ablution surroundings for worshippers (Brough et al , 1979; Weinstein and Hota, 2004; Carpenter et al , 2006; Dancer, 2009; Kim et al , 2013; Kim, 2016, 2017, 2018a, 2018b, 2018c, Kim, 2020).…”

“…Skewness ( R sk ) and Kurtosis ( R kr ) parameters were also determined to examine roughness profile forms and allocations of each ablution floor. The selection of the surface roughness parameters was based on published studies (Kim and Smith, 2000; Chang et al , 2003; Kim, 2004a, 2004b; Kim et al , 2013; Kim, 2016, 2017, 2018a, 2018b, 2018c).…”
