Understanding medical mistrust and HPV vaccine hesitancy among multiethnic parents in Los Angeles

Abstract: Determinants of parental HPV vaccine hesitancy, including medical mistrust and exposure to negative vaccine information, are understudied in racial/ethnic minority communities where vaccine uptake is low. We conducted a cross-sectional survey (March 2021) among parents of adolescents, ages 9–17 years, from an academic enrichment program serving low-income, first-generation, underrepresented minority families in Los Angeles to understand determinants of parental HPV vaccine hesitancy. “…Approximately 80% of parents in the USA showed willingness toward vaccination for their children with cancer due to the information obtained through oncologists, and the acceptance rate was quite higher than observed among parents with healthy children (48,49). However, another study conducted in Taiwan highlighted the vaccine hesitancy among parents of children with ADHD owing to the regular use of medications for ADHD (50).…”

“…Odds of HPV vaccine intention were higher among caregivers who intended to vaccinate their child (OR=4.16, 95% CI: 2.79-6.19) and themselves (OR=1.96, 95% CI: 1.29=3.00) against COVID-19. In March, 2021, Tsui and colleagues (2022) conducted a survey of 357 parents of adolescents aged 9-17 years who were participating in an academic enrichment program for low-income, first-generation, racial or ethnic minority families in Los Angeles, California, United States. Among other potential determinants of HPV vaccine hesitancy, the authors measured intention to obtain a COVID-19 vaccine for their children once it became available.…”

“…Mistrust and hesitancy often go hand-in-hand, particularly amongst lowincome, medically underserved communities, so further research is needed to fully elucidate the relationship between medical mistrust and HPV vaccine hesitancy among vulnerable populations. 15,20…”
