Understanding Patient Experiences With Goal Setting for Diabetes Self-management After Diabetes Education

Abstract: Diabetes educators need to understand self-care experiences of patients with diabetes in the early stage after diagnosis and education. A survey assessed patient-generated measures of experiences with goals (self-care behaviors) after diabetes education among patients with type 2 diabetes (N = 97) between 6 months and 1.5 years since diagnosis. Most patients set goals during diabetes education and thought that the goals were useful. There is evidence suggesting that patients experiencing difficulty with tradit… Show more

“…The link between goal setting and adherence to diabetes self-care is not always explicit and needs to be strengthened. 23 While research suggests that goal setting is strongly associated with overall adherence to diabetes self-care, patients (and providers) may not give sufficient attention to this important relationship. The use of telemedicine to facilitate diabetes selfmanagement training including individual goal setting, particularly in underserved populations, will be important to investigate further in future studies.…”

“…49 The political focus on SM has emerged, in part, as a response to growing demands placed on 50 healthcare services, which have occurred due to people living longer and with an increased number 51 of long-term health conditions (LTC) (Sprague et al, 2006). In England fifteen million people live with 52 a LTC (NHS England, 2015).…”

“…Standards 7-10 are concerned with patient aspects, most importantly individualised assessment, goal setting and effectiveness of the programme. Goal setting in diabetes education often relates to Social Cognitive Theory (Baranowski et al, 2002) and includes the process of identifying behaviours (self-control), greater confidence to perform behaviours (self-efficacy; Krichbaum et al, 2003), positive reinforcement and other constructs presumed to maximise goal (behaviour) attainment (Sprague et al, 2006). The Department of Health published findings of a longitudinal study on public attitudes towards self-care in 2008 (Department of Health, 2008).…”
