Understanding Physical Activity During Home-Based Cardiac Rehabilitation From Multiple Theoretical Perspectives

Abstract: : All 3 theories appeared to be viable options to inform the development of a MVPA intervention during home-based CR. However, the key constructs to target within each theory varied, suggesting the need to potentially use multiple theories to inform intervention development.

“…The barrier self-efficacy scale was devel oped via CR focus groups to generate CR-specific PA barriers (Blanchard et al, 2011;. Patients were asked "During the next 6 months, how confident are you that you will adhere to your exercise prescription even if... (a) you fear you will have another cardiac event, (b) you have back pain, (c) you have medication side effects, (d) you had angina/chest pain earlier in the day, (e) you have health-related problems, (f) there is bad weather, (g) you have too much work, (h) you do not have time, and (i) it is too expensive to exercise?"…”

“…An independent evaluation of this measure found its reliability and validity to compare favourably to 9 other self-report measures of exercise based on various criteria including test-retest scores, objective activity monitors, and fitness indices [26]. Additionally, the LSI has been used frequently in CR [27, 28]. According to Godin (2011) [29], the examination of physical activity from a health benefit perspective should focus only on the moderate and strenuous categories of the scale.…”

“…The mean age of participants ranged from 9.4 to 80.0 years. Men were considerably under-represented, with only 12/55 models (22%) using a sample with a male majority (53,54,63,64,66,68,70,72,73,83,87). Further, only 1/55 (2%) used a male-only sample (87) compared to 11/55 (20%) with female-only samples (52,55,65,67,71,86,87,89).…”

“…In addition to varied populations, the 55 PA models also tested various types of PA behaviour and included different combinations of SCT constructs. Nineteen (35%) used a measure of total PA as the dependent variable (55,58,60,64,67,68,71,73,75,77,78,(81)(82)(83)(84)86,88,89) and 15 (27%) used moderate-to-vigorous PA (54,57,(61)(62)(63)65,66,70,72,79,87). In addition, five (9%) used vigorous PA (52,59,69,90), three (5%) used moderate PA (59,76,90) and one (2%) used light PA (53).…”
