“…Although past studies have indicated that a reduction in consumption monitoring may lead to overeating ( Wansink, 2010 ), thus suggesting that screen-based eating could have a negative impact. However, recent results show that screen-based eating may not necessarily lead to overeating, but rather may have a relaxing effect on individuals, thereby even prolonging meal time without overeating ( Khot et al, 2022 ). Therefore, the practice of screen-based meals in bed described by I02 could be interpreted as another form of mindful eating with screens ( Khot et al, 2022 ; Mathieu, 2009 ).…”

“…Moreover, as suggested in Tabares‐Tabares et al (2022), distraction because of screen viewing may interrupt some signal processing involved in the regulation of food intake (e.g., the awareness of satiety cues generated from gastric distention), which is also in line with the theory of intuitive eating regarding the negative effects of eating with distractions (Tribole & Resch, 2020). Indeed, a recent pilot study with 10 participants reported that screen use while eating might influence one's awareness of body cues (e.g., hunger and satiety cues), chewing rate, and food gaze (Khot et al, 2022). Thus, screen use while eating may lead to lower psychological (e.g., mindfulness) and physiological (e.g., hunger and satiety cues) awareness of one's eating, which in turn may contribute to lower intuitive eating and higher disordered eating.…”

“…Mindfulness eating involves savouring food by eating slowly, in small portions, in a quiet environment (Nelson, 2017). Surprisingly, however, HCI exploration of mindfulness eating has been limited for instance to the impact of screen-based distractions (Khot et al, 2022), while the key aspects of mindfulness eating are yet to be addressed. A similar study evaluated mindfulness eating mobile apps (Lyzwinski et al, 2019), but it differs in terms of method; the previous study employed the Mobile App Rating Scale (Stoyanov et al, 2015), while our study employs expert evaluation as further detailed.…”

“…Increased HCI research has focused on mindfulness technologies (Sas and Chopra, 2015;Sliwinski et al,2017) and eating behaviours (Thomaz et al, 2013;Zhang et al, 2020), emphasizing the body (Gayler et al, 2022) or healthy eating (Epstein et al, 2016), albeit limited work has explored the intersection of these two rather separate research areas, such as in the case of designing for mindfulness eating (Arza et al, 2018) (Khot et al, 2022).…”
