Understanding Soil Surface Water Content Using Light Reflection Theory: A Novel Color Analysis Technique Considering Variability in Light Intensity

Abstract: Accurate measurement of soil surface water content is vital for analyzing evaporation, partition of solar radiation, infiltration, and runoff. Color analysis of soil has already been found to be a nonintrusive, economical, and feasible approach for the measurement of surface water content. However, color contrast within the soil domain was rarely considered in color analysis approaches demonstrated by previous researchers. This color contrast occurs because of the spatial heterogeneity of light intensity in th… Show more

“…The brightness of the soil sample is represented using the RGB value. Pre-calibrated relationships between soil samples at different densities and grain size distributions have been inbuilt [18]. The relationships were evaluated using a widely known technique (ASTM D2216).…”

“…In the next sub-section, we will design a learning environment involving fabrication and analysis of hardware for TDR measurement of soil moisture and its corresponding Arduino UNO-based irrigation control system [39]. In addition, mobile user interface development for soil moisture assessment using color analysis [18] will be proposed.…”

“…However, these approaches are not practicable and cost-effective for large areas. Most recent studies [11] proposed colour analysis technique to interpret the surface moisture content based on the brightness of soil. ImageJ, a public domain image processing tool is used for the colour analysis of soil [12].…”

“…change in colour implies a change in state, operation, condition or is a requirement for the functionality of a system. Therefore, an understanding of these colours with respect to the system has been approached by different methods [5] - [7]. In a more traditional method for colour identification, the eye is used, which faces the issues of human limitation and the ability to distinguish colours, especially similar colours [8].…”
