The United Nations sustainable development goals are under fire. By attempting to cover all that is good and desirable in society, these targets have ended up as vague, weak, or meaningless. We suggest a model for sustainable development based on three moral imperatives: satisfying human needs, ensuring social equity, and respecting environmental limits. The model reflects Our Common Future's central message, moral imperatives laid out in philosophical texts on needs and equity, and recent scientific insights on environmental limits. The model is in conflict with the popular three‐pillar model of sustainable development, which seeks to balance social, environmental, and economic targets. Rather, we argue that sustainable development constitutes a set of constraints on human behaviour, including constraints on economic activity. By identifying indicators, and thresholds, we illustrate that different regions or groups of countries face different challenges. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd and ERP Environment

The fundamental substance employed for energy, construction, smelting and shipbuilding before eighteenth century was wood. However, with the advent of industrial revolution, changes in agriculture, manufacturing, mining, transportation, and technology had an overwhelming consequence on the socio-economic life of the society. This causes natural resources to decline and demand for them to incredibly increase, which led the humanity to fell into intertwined crises of environmental, economic and social systems. To change the situation, paramount changes of thinking and mindset are required and education is the key. This study therefore, explored the perceptions of electrical/electronic lecturers in the polytechnics on the need to incorporate sustainability thinking into Higher National Diploma electrical/electronic engineering curriculum in Nigeria. Two research questions guided the study through qualitative research design. Sixty-five (65) electrical/electronic lecturers in the polytechnics within the states under the study made up the target population, and only senior lecturers were selected to participate in the study. This is because of their experience in teaching electrical/electronic courses in the institutions. The authors conducted qualitative semi-structured interviews to generate data used in answering the research questions. The authors transcribed and thematically analyzed the data. Findings revealed a common view in which the participants indicated an urgent need for incorporation of sustainability thinking in to the said curriculum. Findings also showed the possible benefits of incorporating sustainability thinking to include environmental protection, economic prosperity, social wellbeing and technical sustainability. The authors recommended a model for incorporating sustainability thinking into HND electrical/electronic engineering curriculum.

In numerous UN policy documents, a sustainable future through education is set in a key position; the UNESCO Global Action Programme on Education for Sustainable Development (UNESCO, 2018) is no exception. Therefore, it is of great importance to examine and report how different UN member countries work towards the implementation of sustainability at all levels of education. This article is a review of recently published research in Finland, with a focus on sustainability in the educational system. Specifically, the article deals with teacher education, combined with theoretical research around sustainability and systems thinking, to find a pathway forward. The main finding is that higher education in Finland cannot guarantee that student teachers are prepared enough to teach about sustainability. This issue is discussed and addressed in the last part of the article.
