Plant waste (PW) and excess sludge (ES) are two main organic matters of municipal solid waste. However, there are few reports on their anaerobic co-digestion. In this work, the mixed proportion of PW and ES anaerobic co digestion was rst optimized at mesophilic temperature, and then the anaerobic co-digestion of PW and ES was enhanced with strong oxidant calcium peroxide (CP). The results showed that the optimal mixing ratio of PW and ES was 1/1 (in terms of volatile solids), and the C/N of mixed digestion substrate was 23.5/1, the maximum methane production was 172.6 mL/g (in terms of volatile solids). CP could enhance methane production from anaerobic co-digestion of PW and ES. When the content of CP was 0.2 g/g (in terms of total suspended solids), the maximum methane production was 234.8 mL/g, about 1.4 times of the blank. The mechanism investigation showed that CP promoted the release of organic matter during the co-digestion, and the higher the content of CP, the greater the release of soluble chemical oxygen demand. The presence of appropriate amount of CP promoted the activities of key enzymes in anaerobic fermentation process, and then increased the e ciency of methane production. The results of this work provide an alternative strategy for the resource utilization of PW and ES.

The expanding use of chitosan in sewage and sludge treatment processes raises concerns about its potential environmental impacts. However, investigations of the impacts of chitosan on sewage sludge anaerobic digestion where chitosan is present at substantial levels are sparse. This study therefore aims to fill this knowledge gap through both long-term and batch tests. The results showed that 4 g/kg total suspended solid (TSS) chitosan had no acute effects on methane production, but chitosan at 8–32 g/kg TSS inhibited methane production by 7.2–30.3%. Mass balance and metabolism of organic analyses indicated that chitosan restrained the transfer of organic substrates from solid phase to liquid phase, macromolecules to micromolecules, and finally to methane. Further exploration revealed that chitosan suppressed the secretion of extracellular polymeric substances of anaerobes by occupying the connection sites of indigenous carbohydrates and increased the mass transfer resistance between anaerobes and substrates, which thereby lowered the metabolic activities of anaerobes. Although chitosan could be partly degraded by anaerobes, it is much more persistent to be degraded compared with indigenous organics in sludge. Microbial community and key enzyme encoding gene analyses further revealed that the inhibition of chitosan to CO2-dependent methanogenesis was much severer than that to acetate-dependent methanogenesis.

Biomethane is suggested as an advanced biofuel for the hard-to-abate sectors such as heavy transport. However, future systems that optimize the resource and production of biomethane have yet to be definitively defined. This paper assesses the opportunity of integrating anaerobic digestion (AD) with three emerging bioelectrochemical technologies in a circular cascading bioeconomy, including for power-to-gas AD (P2G-AD), microbial electrolysis cell AD (MEC-AD), and AD microbial electrosynthesis (AD-MES). The mass and energy flow of the three bioelectrochemical systems are compared with the conventional AD amine scrubber system depending on the availability of renewable electricity. An energy balance assessment indicates that P2G-AD, MEC-AD, and AD-MES circular cascading bioelectrochemical systems gain positive energy outputs by using electricity that would have been curtailed or constrained (equivalent to a primary energy factor of zero). This analysis of technological innovation, aids in the design of future cascading circular biosystems to produce sustainable advanced biofuels.
