Understanding the impact of inhaler technique on asthma and COPD

Abstract: Ineffective inhaler technique is a common problem that can lead to poor disease management and an increase in the frequency of exacerbations. It is not always down to patients choosing to use inhalers in an inappropriate way, as evidence suggests health professionals are often found to be lacking in their ability to correctly teach inhaler technique. This article looks at the evidence regarding incorrect use of inhalers and the common themes associated with poor technique. It also provides a step-by-step guide… Show more

“…In order to be effective, asthma counselling should focus on medication, more specifically, safe dosage and correct inhalation technique (Kauppi et al 2015;Lee et al 2016). However, there is a general lack of inhalation technique counselling (Kauppi et al 2015;Lingner et al 2017), and worryingly, Hickey (2014) reports that there is also a lack of staff who are able to demonstrate the correct inhalation technique. Patients are used to taking medication and immediately experiencing a degree of relief in their symptoms.…”

“…Hickey [30] suggests that ineffective inhaler technique leads to increase in exacerbations and poor management of the disease. Hickey [30] found that there is evidence suggesting that health professionals lack the ability to teach inhaler technique properly however another reason could be as simple as the patient forgetting the correct technique, reasons miss management is multifaceted. Nurses must consider patient empowerment, which involves the moving the power from nurses towards the patient.…”

“…For example, lung defence mechanism involves resistance and removal of any inhaled foreign particle by various physico-chemical mechanisms, such as muco-ciliary clearances (Newman, 2017). In addition, the poor delivery of these therapeutic compounds is further increased by the poor adherence to medications and/or inappropriate inhaler device techniques followed by patients with CRDs (Hickey, 2014). Hence, more innovative and effective routes of drug delivery are urgently required to treat these CRDs.…”
