Understanding the Interaction Between Animals and Wearables

Abstract: Animals can be negatively affected by wearable tracking devices, even those marketed as 'animal friendly' and increasingly used with companion animals, such as cats. To understand the wearer experience of cats fitted with popular GPS trackers, we measured the behavior of 13 feline participants while they were wearing the devices during a field study. The aim of our behavioral analysis was twofold: investigating potential signs of discomfort generated by the devices to evaluate the impact that such intervention… Show more

“…One popular dichotomy made by Lawson et al [29] is the appropriation of Baumer's [4] term usees, where animals are imposed into using systems unknowingly. This is contradictory to the standard definition of users, where animals are seen as directly controlling systems [39]. As this dissection implies, an animal's role has implications on their agency in computer systems.…”

“…The human, who initiated the communication in the first place by attaching and starting the device, does not reply. The same tracking device may inadvertently be sending a visual signal which differentiates the wearer from other individuals [47,64]. Depending on the species involved and on the device design, this may alter social interactions, attract predators or alter the wearer's movements.…”
