Understanding the Role of Nitronate Monooxygenases in Virulence of the Human Fungal Pathogen Aspergillus fumigatus

Abstract: Aspergillus fumigatus is the leading cause of the fungal invasive disease called aspergillosis, which is associated with a high mortality rate that can reach 50% in some groups of immunocompromised individuals. The increasing prevalence of azole-resistant A. fumigatus isolates, both in clinical settings and the environment, highlights the importance of discovering new fungal virulence factors that can potentially become targets for novel antifungals. Nitronate monooxygenases (Nmos) represent potential targets … Show more

“…We detected 43 DEGs in this category, of which 18 are downregulated and 25 are upregulated. Among the most downregulated DEGs, we found a gene encoding nitronate monooxygenase (ID: 110021, FC: -11.75), which has been described mainly in pathogenic ascomycetes, where it catalyzes the denitrification of nitroalkanes associated with nitro-oxidative stress (79). In addition, two cytochrome P450 encoding genes (ID: 456826 and ID: 24490; FC: -9.47 and FC: -4.54, respectively) were also downregulated in the Δsnb1.…”

“…Invasive aspergillosis is associated with high mortality in immunocompromised individuals. 7 Mediastinum involvement with Aspergillus species is rare, especially in immunocompetent hosts. We systematically reviewed the literatures in the PubMed database using the term “mediastinal Aspergillus”.…”

“…has good biocontrol potential against R. solani that could be utilized in Iran in the Guilan province and others where rice is planted. One should keep in mind, though, that A. fumigatus is a human pathogen that causes a fungal invasive disease called aspergillosis, which can be particularly dangerous in some groups of immunocompromised individuals [ 52 ]. Therefore, caution is advisable when using this fungus in crop protection.…”
