Understanding the roles of metal sources and dodecanethiols in the formation of metal sulfide nanocrystals via a two-phase approach

Abstract: We present a two-phase approach for controllable synthesis of metal sulfide nanocrystals, such as Cu2−xS, Ag2S and Ni9S8, in which the reaction takes place at the water/oil interface.

“…XRD analysis:-From fig.3 it can be clearly appreciated that all the peaks in the XRD patterns are consistent with the JCPDS data (89-5895) and the results were found to be in agreement with the reported diffraction pattern of CuO nanoparticles [29] (2 22), (3 13) plane orientation. The spectrum is identical to that of pure CuO, indicating the formation of single-phase CuO with monoclinic structure.…”

“…First, the metal ions can migrate to the water/oil interface to react with dodecanethiol (DDT) to form monolayer-capped metal clusters through the S atoms on the basis of our previous report. 11 In this reaction system, the mobility of the Cu and Zn ions is comparative, and they can reach the water/oil interface at about the same time. It is well known that the Cu ions have stronger coordination abilities with DDT than Zn ions, thus the monoclinic Cu 31 S 16 nuclei can be first formed, which then serve as the seeds for further growth.…”

“…10 Very recently, our group reported controllable synthesis of metal sulfide nanocrystals via such a two-phase approach, in which the nucleation and growth process occurred at the water/oil interface. 11 Herein, this simple two-phase approach has been extended to prepare a series of Cu 31 S 16 -metal sulfide (ZnS, CdS and CuInS 2 ) HNS for the first time. The morphology of the Cu 31 S 16 -ZnS HNS can be tailored by varying the molar ratio of the Cu/Zn precursors and the reactivity of the Zn precursor.…”
