Underwater Localization and Tracking of Physical Systems

Abstract: We investigate the problem of localizing an underwater sensor node based on message broadcasting from multiple surface nodes. With the time-of-arrival measurements from a DSP-based multicarrier modem, each sensor node localizes itself based on the travel time differences among multiple senders to the receiver. Using one-way message passing, such a solution can scale to accommodate a large number of nodes in a network. We consider the issue from not only the physical layer, but also at the node processing layer… Show more

“…The receiving antenna array with nine electrodes are located in the experiment model, which are listed in Table 2. The low frequency sinusoidal current excitation of 100 Hz is loaded on the dipole with the dipole moment p = [2, 1,1]. The data samples used in this experiment model are N = 100.…”

“…In the last decades, the acoustic based locating method has played a main role in underwater localization [1,2]. However, the complexity and uncertain characteristics of underwater environments, such as the varying temperature and density, multi-path propagation, Doppler effect, and propagation delay, seriously influence the acoustic propagation and underwater channel [3][4][5].…”

“…In order to provide context for the e↵ects of the Doppler speed estimate, we will compare the results with the tracking algorithms similar to what we developed for TDOA systems in [6]. All filter parameters (namely process noise) are the same where applicable to provide a more valid comparison.…”

“…Other methods have been developed from a network perspective, working largely to extend the multilateration technique to cover large areas or exploit the broadcast nature of wireless transmissions to reduce the communication overhead [16,17,18]. In our previous work, we had developed a system that used scheduled periodic broadcasts from timesynchronized anchors [19] and another system with asynchronous anchors that can react to a localization demand [20].…”
