Underwater radio frequency image sensor using progressive image compression and region of interest

Abstract: The increasing demand for underwater robotic intervention systems around the world in several application domains requires more versatile and inexpensive systems. By using a wireless communication system, supervised semi-autonomous robots have freedom of movement; however, the limited and varying bandwidth of underwater radio frequency (RF) channels is a major obstacle for the operator to get camera feedback and supervise the intervention. This paper proposes the use of progressive (embedded) image compression… Show more

“…The UMCI-RCP also permits the transmission of image feedback from the ROV to operator. The DEBT (Depth Embedded Block Tree) algorithm [25] is embedded into the UMCI-RCP in order to make the most of the small Fig. 4 Structure of the message transmitted by the ROV, with the detail of the codification of the ROV status bandwidth available in underwater environments.…”

“…Un programa en la Raspberry Pi del ROV, mostrado en la Fig. 4 El protocolo integra el algoritmo de compresión progresivo DEBT (Depth Embedded Block Tree) [7], lo cual habilita al operador el poder especificar un tamaño fijo de la imagen comprimida. En cada paquete enviado por el ROV se transmite la odometría del mismo, unas flags de estado y de información del paquete, y una porción de la imagen codificada (ver Fig.…”

“…To address this concern, progressive image transmission system is introduced, which compresses and transmits the coded bit streams under certain constraints. The progressive image transmission system subdivides the transmission process into number of stages and progressively refines the quality of the reconstructed image [16]. In this research, a new progressive image transmission system is proposed to enhance the perceptual quality of progressively transmitted images.…”
