Growth, external morphology and reproductive phenology of a southern Adriatic population of Pterocladiella capillacea from a marine cave were investigated. Production of new uprights from creeping axes was limited to late autumn-winter; upright growth in length and branching order increase reached their maxima in late summer. Tetrasporic fronds were dominant from June to September, with a peak in July, while cystocarpic uprights were rather rare and recorded in August only. Two stable, distinct morphotypes occurred in this population at two sampling sites exposed to different daily photon irradiances. Uprights from the more illuminated site were regularly pinnate, with numerous closely packed lateral branches, representing the best-known phenotype of the species; in contrast, uprights from the more shaded inner site had very long and narrow axes, greater intervals between first-order branches and lower branching order. Statistical analysis demonstrated that upright growth in length and branching was significantly different at the two sites; upright biomass in the more illuminated site was generally higher because of the higher orders of branching

Identification of small Gelidium species based on morphology is difficult; as a consequence, the name Gelidium pusillum has been used for many small gelidiacean taxa throughout the world. Molecular-assisted identifications, however, are demonstrating that G. pusillum has a more restricted distribution than previously recognised. We used detailed morphological analyses combined with rbcL and cox1 sequence analyses to identify and assess the phylogenetic relationships of small Mediterranean Gelidium species. These analyses revealed the presence of two new species, G. adriaticum sp. nov. and G. carolinianum sp. nov. Gelidium adriaticum is a closely related sister species to G. pusillum, which was not found amongst our Mediterranean specimens. Gelidium carolinianum has been previously collected outside the Mediterranean, but it was misidentified as G. americanum. Morphological observations and sequence data generated from G. americanum types and other historical specimens clarified the status and distribution of this species. Phylogenetic analyses resolved G. carolinianum as a species in the Mediterranean and warm-temperate northwest Atlantic; whereas, G. americanum occurs in the Caribbean and tropical western Atlantic, and is sister to G. calidum from Brazil and closely related to G. crinale.

Parviphycus bompardii sp. nov. and P. albertanoae (Gelidiales, Rhodophyta), two species misidentified as Gelidiella ramellosa in the Mediterranean Sea

A critical re-examination of both recent and historical herbarium specimens from the Mediterranean Sea attributed to Gelidiella ramellosa highlighted that previous identifications were incorrect. Our investigations have demonstrated that the examined specimens actually belong to the genus Parviphycus; some of them must be attributed to the recently described P. albertanoae and some to the undescribed species Parviphycus bompardii. The new species shows morphological features that distinguish it from the other congeners and represents the fifth species of the genus occurring in the Mediterranean Sea. Parviphycus bompardii is readily recognizable for both branching pattern and characteristics of tetrasporangial sori. Results of this study suggest a re-examination of previous Mediterranean records attributed to G. ramellosa and a much more accurate approach to future records of Gelidiales. An identification key to Mediterranean species of Parviphycus is also presented based on our results and also on a review of the literature.
