Unerring Planning of Clinching Processes through the Use of Mathematical Methods

Abstract: Mechanical joining technologies are becoming increasingly important with the trend towards light and multi-material designs in the automotive industry. Providing robust connection techniques will be of particular importance. Thus, rejection rates are reduced and costs are cut in the parts production. This paper discusses the example of clinching and its potentials and limits concerning FEM based sensitivity analysis and optimization for the joining by forming technology. By determining the sensitivity of the d… Show more

“…In [30] the influence of strain hardening and the variation of sheet thickness on the joint characteristics t n , f and t b are studied using a metamodel to investigate the robustness of the clinching process. In [31] the possibilities and limitations of FEM-based sensitivity analysis and optimization for the clinching process are discussed. For the optimization of the clinching tools, the sensitivities of the most important tool dimensions and a robustness analysis are determined.…”

“…When using the clinching process to connect sheets with different strengths and plasticity, the sheets' position relative to the arrangement of the die is fundamental. The potential and limitation of sensitivity analysis and optimization of forming process connection based on the finite element method have been discussed through examples [70]. Tools for specific material combinations and those for connecting different thicknesses and plates were designed.…”

“…Experimental evidence confirmed the validity of their approach. The potential use of FE-based methods for conducting sensitivity analysis and optimization studies for clinch joining was presented by Drossel et al [ 146 ]. The authors derived the most important values for forming die optimization by determining the sensitivity of the design to variations in the connection parameters.…”
