Unfolding and displaying the influencing factors of advance directives from the stakeholder's perspective: A concept mapping approach

Abstract: Aims To develop a culturally relevant conceptual map to discover perceptions of a statutory form of advance directive (AD) for Hong Kong Chinese. Design This was the first study on AD using a concept mapping approach with two phases. Methods The data collection of the two phases was conducted from February 2016–February 2017. In Phase I, 96 participants were recruited using purposive sampling. In Phase II, multi‐dimensional scaling and hierarchical cluster analysis were used to create a concept map based on qu… Show more

“…This study will use a concept mapping approach to identify and display forms of social capital available for family caregivers 32 33. This methodology is commonly used for planning and evaluating health and social policies and programmes in a participatory manner 34 35. Trochim33 proposed six steps of the concept mapping process, namely: (1) preparation, (2) generation of statements, (3) structuring of statements, (4) representation of statements, (5) interpretation of maps and (6) utilisation of maps.…”

“…Hence, three experts in evidence-based program planning were asked to interpret the final number of clusters based on the statistical analysis results and their professional knowledge; they were asked to identify an appropriate name for each final cluster. This approach of determining the number of clusters to use in the final representation is recommended by concept mapping 8,24 . Additionally, Go-zone was performed to demonstrate the priority of each factor in a matrix 25 .…”

“…A stakeholder is an individual, group, and/or organization with a vested interest in deciding to implement best practices. The stakeholder-engaged analysis could also maximize the alignment of stakeholders’ interests with the objectives of guideline practices and could address the risks associated with unsupportive stakeholders 8 . In addition, implementation science attends to the effectiveness of implementation strategies.…”

“…To facilitate documentation of ADs, multi-faceted factors associated with completion of ADs need to be examined [21]. Some demographic and clinical factors, such as older age [14,22,23], female sex [14,23], higher education [22], certain comorbidities (cancer and renal dysfunction) [14], and worse HF progress [24] were reported to have their relationships to completion of ADs, AD attitudes, and/or EoL care more likely than each counterpart.…”
