Unforseen factors influencing Fe(III)‐containing cations sorption on strongly basic anion exchangers

Abstract: The sorption and partial destruction of the Fe(III)-containing compounds in the aqueous medium in strongly basic anion exchangers AV-17 and Varion-AD phase have been investigated. It is shown that partial destruction of the Fe (III) compounds in acidulated water (pH 5 2) and in K 2 SO 4 , Fe 2 (SO 4 ) 3 solutions takes place. With increasing of temperature up to 508C, the desorption degree of the iron ions from polymer phase decreases. In dried polymer, the structural and electronic state of iron compounds, ac… Show more

“…The processes (1) and (2) are accompanied with passing a part of metallic cations from polymer to liquid phase 16. But, as it is seen in Table I, obtaining of AV‐17(Bi,FeOOH) sample on heating in water medium of AV‐17(Bi,Fe) sample is not accompanied with iron ions lost.…”

“…After interruption of the process of formation of the jarositetype compounds by separating the polymer from solution for 10 h after 2.5 h and placing it again in solution, the content of Fe 3+ in the polymer phase has decreased. 8 Because in the solution of Fe 2 (SO 4 ) 3 , which has been in contact with the polymer, no NO 3 − ions were found, we consider that in the system, nitrogen oxides NO x were initially formed, which were then converted into nitric acid.…”

“…In addition, this is confirmed by the formation of Fe 2+ ions in the system. 8 The Fe 2+ ions are not able to form jarosite-type compounds; therefore, in the result of the redox processes in the polymer phase, decomposition of iron(III) compounds takes place.…”
