Unified Finite Difference Modeling of Transient Flow in Naturally Fractured Carbonate Karst Reservoirs - A 3D Case Study

Abstract: The modeling and numerical simulation of fluid flow in naturally fractured carbonate karst reservoirs are extremely challenging due to non-Darcy flow in vugs and caves connected by fracture networks. The momentum balance of such flow has been shown to be better described by the Brinkman equation both physically and mathematically, and many methods have been proposed in the literature dealing with the steady-state Brinkman model. We carry Brinkman's idea one step further and propose a transient flow model which… Show more

“…To support the findings of this study we investigated the flow performances of the models generated by both methods and compared them with that of the reference model. The flow performance study was conducted in a single-phase transient flow simulator developed by He et al (2015aHe et al ( , 2015b) based on the Brinkman equation. Properties of the porous medium and the grids are listed in Table 3.…”

“…The flow between the porous medium and the karst cave is coupled by the improved B-J-S equation. Many other scholars have also studied free flow and porous medium seepage in fractured-vuggy reservoirs (Popov et al, 2007;He et al, 2015).…”
