Unilateral agenesis of the parotid gland associated with a pleomorphic adenoma in the ipsilateral buccal space

Abstract: Unilateral agenesis of the parotid gland is a rare condition. Although pleomorphic adenomas are the most common benign glandular tumors of the buccal space, to the author's knowledge unilateral agenesis of the parotid gland associated with pleomorphic adenoma in the ipsilatearal buccal space has not been previously described in the literature. We present here a case of the association of these two conditions.

“…Another two patients suffered from lateral facial cleft associated with accessory mandible [7, 24]. Pleomorphic adenoma of the contralateral parotid gland, the ipsilateral accessory parotid gland, or buccal space was reported in each case [18, 19, 23]. In another case agenesis of parotid gland was masqueraded in I-123 metaiodobenzylguanidine scan with SPECT/CT by a metastasis of a left craniocervical neuroblastoma [21].…”

“…10 So, radiological assessment of the patients with parotid aplasia can have important clinical and surgical implications in patients with associated pathology. Lee 11 reported a case of a pleomorphic adenoma, originating from the accessory parotid gland of the buccal cavity, with the presence of ipsilateral parotid gland aplasia. In our case, accessory parotid gland was not detected.…”
