Unilateral retinal vein occlusion in a seven-year-old boy with a high level of lipoproteins (a)

Abstract

Purpose: To report a case of unilateral central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) in a young patient with a high level of lipoprotein(a) (LP(a)). Case presentation: A 7-year-old boy reported two days of vision loss in his left eye. The best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was 40 cm in front of his left eye. A complete fundus evaluation including fluorescein fundus angiography (FFA)showed CRVO in his left eye. Clinical laboratory tests showed a high level of Lp(a) in the patient, but his family had no known history of genetic and embolic disorders. Then, the patient’s left eye received anti-inflammatory andanti-infection treatments as well as an intravitreal dexamethasone (IVD) implant (Ozurdex®). The last follow-up examination showed that the BCVA of the left eye was improved to 0.4. Conclusion: We describe a young patient diagnosed with CRVO with a high level of Lp(a). Young patients should be thoroughly evaluated to diagnose and initiate appropriate management at the earliest.
